AEOLIAN RIDE
AEOLIAN ISLAND VULCAN
A LITTLE RIDE IN THE LAND OF THE GOD OF THE WIND

TOPOLINO TIME
07.16.11 AFTER I LEFT PORTUGAL I TOOK A TRIP TO MEET DANIELLA FUGGETTA (FROM THE MILAN RIDE) IN SICILY. WHILE WE WERE PLANNING THE TRIP SHE ASKED ME "DO YOU WANT TO GO THE AEOLIAN ISLANDS?" AND THE OBSESSION TO VISIT THE LAND OF WIND WAS PLANTED IN MY HEAD. SO DANI KINDLY AGREED TO NOT ONLY TO ACCOMPANY ME TO THE ISLAND OF VULCAN, BUT TO DO A MINI AEOLIAN PERFORMANCE ON THE ISOLE EOLIE.

  DANI
We didn't know each other so well but could feel a magic kinship for bikes, adventure, swimming and sweets.

Heaven times heaven.

VULCAN
It took a lot of energy for us to get to this island. My obsession nearly destroyed us. Vulcan turned out to be on the verge of exploding with tourism and we caught the influx of people and jellyfish in the water.

POSITIVE ENERGY
Misery really loves company. At sunset we entered the famous Fahngi (mud) baths. Guaranteed to make your clothes smell for days. But what they didn't tell us was that if you get the mud in your eyes they will burn like chili peppers and if you are lucky local people might see your burning red eyes and take pity on you, and squeeze a lemon in your eye making you cry like a baby so the sulfur can exit, only for you to discover that every time you close your eyes lie down your eyes burn more and more. The very polite French teenagers next to us had to put up with us laughing and crying until the middle of the night.

UP THE VULCANO
We got up as early as possible to climb the volcano.

  AEOLIAN SHEEP
I loved the cries of the farmer that brought the sheep running down the hills. Kind of like an Aeolian Whoop but more dramatic and long.

  ONE RING TO RULE THEM
I couldn't help compare some of our trials to Frodo and Sam in the Lord of the Rings.

PASSING THE DIFFICULTIES
When it got difficult or scary we helped each other with kindness. Stay. Stay. Stay.

NAMES IN THE PIT
People had ventured where you were not supposed to and left their names set out in big rocks in the center of the volcano.

WE LEFT A PART OF OURSELVES BEHIND
I won't say which part.

TO THE STREETS!
After a bit of chaos, we discovered Dani's wallet missing when we went to buy tickets of of the burning island. I went to find money only to discover the only cash machine on the island was broken. Luckily a lady left her wallet with the police and we were able to buy tickets. We rested a moment on the beach where I proceeded to cut my hand while cutting a melon. The owner of the bar filled my cut with sugar and covered it with a napkin and told me to hold ice on top. This local remedy did the trick until I was able to get a proper bandage!!

  PASSING FAHNGI
As there were only two of us we had to rely on the kindness of strangers to get some shots of us both.

LOCAL LOVE
I get jealous when I see a man like him because I know he loves cannolis as much as I do but he gets to eat the best ones in the world any time.

  FRIENDLY VULCAN
She's practicing her Spock butt tranquilizer. Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

FINALLY THE FERRY
So after the ride we have just 1 hour to shower, pack the camping gear and get to the boat. With broken luggage we make it to the boat before it launches and as we line up and hand the ticket in to get on the Ferry Man tells us that we are getting on the wrong line, that our boat is leaving at the dock 50 meters over. Dani runs to the boat and I trail behind with our broken luggage, my pants falling down. Luckily we made it. Otherwise I think the Volcano would have take a human sacrifice.

  SOGNI DE CANOLLI
They say "Golden Dreams" when you are going to sleep in Italy. We realized in Sicily this really means Dreams of Canoli. Thanks to Dani and the grace of the gods of wind we got a taste of these golden cannoli dreams.

GRAZIE to Dani for her friendship and my family for encouraging my weirding ways with love. Also thanks to the Vulcans. And thanks to the little baker man on the volcano who gave us home made biscotti and the fisherman who gave us a lift to the ferry.
