RAINBOW RIDE TAKES OVER ROCKAWAY BEACH

RE-IMAGINE THE ROCKAWAY AND TAKE ACTION
images you see here are from May 2012 at Rockaway Beach. Hurricane Sandy caused a lot of devastation to this area and many others along the coast. Please support the relief efforts by donating to a local foundation working to restore the area, ROCKAWAY WATERFRONT ALLIANCE. Let's imagine a better future and make it happen together

  ROCK ROCK ROCK ROCKING
THE BEACH THE AEOLIAN WAY

MAY 19, 2012 THE FIRST EVER AEOLIAN RIDE KIDS LED THE ROCKAWAY WATERFRONT ALLIANCE'S FIRST EVER ANNUAL BIKE PARADE FROM JACOB RIIS PARK TO THE FESTIVITIES AT BEACH 97TH ST IN ROCKAWAY BEACH, NEW YORK. IT WAS TRULY A MAGICAL DAY - SEE IT IN STEREO :)

KICKING IT OFF AT JACOB RIIS PARK
Jacob Riis originally opened in 1932 as a public bathhouse for the beach goers. Rockaway Artist set up a bike decorating station was set up for parade participants to bedazzle their bikes.

  WILDLIFE IN THE PARK
There were all kinds of interesting things on bikes in this ride, including pirates, a robotic puppet and a kayak towed by park rangers dressed as plants.

THERE WERE PLANT PEOPLE,
The national parks greened up their bikes.

  ROBOTIC TALKING PUPPET
This really confused me at first. I thought it was a real kid out of the corner of my eye.

THERE WERE PIRATES,
This pirate captain was tried and true - he NEVER left his station on his ship

  .
AND, OF COURSE, THERE WERE AEOLIAN KIDS!
Some of the kid's were too big for the rainbow costumes and went straight to the adult sizes.

I THINK IT GOES THIS WAY
Putting on the costume is not intuitive but the team spirit to help each other out is always strong.

MAKING IT HAPPEN
The people are what makes this ride happen, Jeanne from Rockaway Waterfront Alliance and her daughter supporting the first Aeolian Kids Ride.

EARLY RISER
Devon, the first Aeolian kid to arrive, takes a little pre-ride siesta. Devon was my super suit tester. If it weren't for his amazing energy and love for riding bikes I think the costumes would still be in the making.

  KIDS RULE!
The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance organizes bike rides for the local kids - so we had a great team of local kids participating in this ride.

ALL AGES COME JOIN THE FUN
Being a "big kid" myself, its hard to stop say no to the "big kids" who want to join the kid's ride. I had a feeling some adults might want to join so I brought extra costumes just for this occasion.
